Criminal Behavior not the fault of Conservatives
The weekend of 3 April was a violent one across the nation. On Friday 3 April 2009 Jiverly Wong age 41 went into the American Civic Association in Binghamton, NY and gunned down 13 people in cold blood before taking his own life. The next day in Pittsburg, PA Richard Poplawski age 22 murdered three police officers and wounded two other officers. Poplawski surrendered to police after one of his weapons jammed and he was wounded by police. On Sunday 34 year old James Harrison killed his five children ages 7-16 in a trailer park in Pierce County, Washington. Harrison then drove to a casino in neighboring King County and shot himself.
Left wing bloggers Andrew Sullivan of the Atlantic and Markos Moulitsas of the Daily Kos blamed Fox News’s Glenn Beck for the deaths of the officers. They claim that Beck’s commentaries about civil unrest sparked the violence. Comments on these sites also blame Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity as well for the violence because of the contents of their news programs. I’ve followed crime stories in the news since the 1970′s and it’s always amazed me how the far left will blame a criminals actions on everything but the criminals for their actions. Sure they have drug or alcohol problems, they came for broken homes, or a variety of other tough problems in their lives, but in 98% of
the cases they made a conscious decision to break the law.
Jiverly Wong had recently lost his job, was going through a divorce, and felt that people were making fun of him for his poor command of the English language. It is obvious from the conflicting statements made by friends who said he was quiet and often helpful, and coworkers who described him as a gun obsessed loner who hated America that he was under a great deal of stress, and we may never know what actually set him off. News organizations have also unfairly taken issue with the fact that Wong practiced at the range on a weekly basis (this is an issue I will address later). Wong wrote a two page rambling letter to a Local news paper before the shooting. In short he planned these murders.
Richard Poplawski was a neo-Nazi who had a problem with authority. He was discharged from the Marines during boot camp for assaulting his Drill Instructor. Friends and family stated that he feared that the Obama administration was planning to take away his guns. These statements were picked up by the far left kooks at the Huffington Post, the Atlantic, and the Daily Kos hence the attack on Beck and his colleagues at Fox News. It was not Glenn that made Poplawski pull the trigger. Poplawski got into an altercation with his mother because his dog urinated on the floor and she asked him to leave; he didn’t and she called the Police. Instead Poplawski made a conscious decision to set up a hasty ambush for Pittsburg Police. When his mother let the officers in Poplawski shot the officers in cold blood.
James Harrison was an abusive and controlling husband whose wife was about to leave him, so he murdered his five children before taking his own life.
The three people I just described were selfish antisocial people who were miserable cowards and failures in life. They wanted take as many people as possible down before taking their own live, and they wanted immortality courtesy of the media. These individuals chose to commit these cowardly acts. Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, and Sean Hannity had nothing to do with it. The best thing that the media could do in these cases is to refuse to address these individuals by name. When describing the motives it would be best to refer to the suspects as dirt bags, cowards, lunatics, waste of oxygen or some other adjective. Don’t give them what they want.
. For the record I try to maintain my proficiency with firearms on a regular basis if my schedule allows it. I am a responsible gun owner who has never thought of using a weapon in an irresponsible manner. When my whole world was turned upside down, and I went through a bad divorce I never thought of picking up a firearm and harming my former spouse and children. Instead I chose to seek out friends and family who helped me cope with major changes in my life. If anything I’m stronger for it. There are also many people like me that have stressful incidents in their lives. They own guns and they frequent ranges; but they don’t go on shooting rampages because life gets rough.
I am sure that the anti gun lobby will use these incidents as the rally cry for more gun laws. The best thing to do is to allow cooler heads to prevail and use existing laws to prosecute offenders. The left could try something really unique like holding people accountable for their actions instead of making excuses for them. If the far left really want to do something constructive my vote would be to revamp the mental health system so that people could get the help they need before they harm themselves and/or others.

Doug’s Opinion
Obama’s Tax Policy Hurts Charities and the Poor
It’s bad enough that charitable organizations are losing donations because of the economy; soon they will face even bigger budget short falls because of President Obama’s decision to reduce tax deductions for charitable tax deductions. The reduction is aimed at those who make more than $250,000 a year so that it will help pay for Obama’s programs. The tax hike will do little to help with the federal deficit and will only hurt charities and the poor. Some of the smaller organizations that provide a valuable service to those in need will have to close their doors because of projected budget shortfalls.
Having been an officer of several charitable organizations over the years I have always been grateful for every donation I have received. As long as the money did not come from criminal activities I never cared about why the money was being donated, because I believe that the reason for giving is between the donor and the almighty.
During my tenure with Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Anchorage, Alaska the economy and our chapter were going through a rough spell. We were spending a lot of money outsourcing our print jobs so that we could ramp up our membership and raise funds for our public awareness campaigns. Our solution was to purchase a copier at a cost of $8500.00. Because of the economy none of the office supply companies were able to donate the equipment, so we had to raise the money ourselves. We received donations from the middle income sector and one of the Washington chapters of M.A.D.D. but we were still about $4,000 dollars short of our goal. Near the end of the tax year several large contributors came through with the rest of the needed funds. I would like to believe that the money was donated because of a belief in our cause, but in reality the true motivation for giving was likely a tax credit. That’s ok because we were able to reach our funding goal so that we could lower our operating costs in order to better serve the community.
Because of rough economic time President Barack Obama has chosen to reduce the deductions that taxpayers earning over 250,000 can take for charitable donations. President Obama believes that the wealthier 1% should pay their fair share of taxes, and rightfully they should. Some will argue that upper income taxpayers should not be allowed to use charitable donations as a tax credit. The argument is that the money used for charity could fund government entitlement programs, or that the government could give the money to charities. That sounds good in theory but in practice the theory is flawed. In order to be able to accept government funding, a charity must be willing to accept the strings that are attached to the funds.
It’s good to have rules about accepting taxpayer money because of waste and fraud. Often times the government attaches such stringent rules to a charity that the funding actually undermines the charity’s mission or it severely limits the application of the funds. In the case of our copier, even if the funding had been available for capital equipment, our news letter would have been subject to government approval. The restrictions attached to the bill would not only hinder free speech, but it would make board members fearful of criticizing lawmakers out of fear of “biting the hand that feeds you.” Because our fight against drunk driving has always been an uphill battle we would be unable to accept such funding.
You are probably wondering how much impact the nation’s top 2-3% wage earners have on charities. In an article written by Dick Morris and Eileen McGann on 28 March 2009, Morris points out that 4,000,000 people had adjusted incomes of $200,000 or more. The group was responsible for 3% o the tax returns, and paid 31% of tax revenue owed to the government. This same group made 44% of all charitable contributions (81 Billion Dollars) in 2008. The money went to churches that further distributed these funds to other needy causes, hospitals, universities, disease research, food banks, soup kitchens, as well as cultural institutions. Many of these donations helped with budget shortfalls that our government would not have been able to meet if they were in charge of charitable donations. Let us not forget the smaller and lesser known groups that traditionally miss out on their piece of the pie.
Now let’s get back to the argument that the government could do a better job of providing for charities. When the economy is up the government would be able to help some but not all charitable groups. In leaner times for the government charities would suffer (as well as the poor) because of the lack of funding. In addition charities run the risk of budget cuts if they are not popular or they are not considered politically correct at the time. If a group makes a powerful political enemy (it happens all the time) they could be shut down due to lack of funding. This is yet another example as to why we cannot and should not be dependent upon the government for everything.
Charitable groups serve a useful purpose in that they have the ability to function with minimal government oversight, and often help people become self sufficient. This is not something that the Government is able to do. Without the assistance of affluent donors charities rarely accomplish certain goals in a reasonable time frame. So wouldn’t it make sense to allow for the current tax credits to remain so that private charities can best serve those in need?
By trying to punish wealthier taxpayers Barack Obama is only punishing charities and the poor. He is also undermining the charitable nature of our society by dictating when and to whom we may donate money too. In his effort to bring about change in our society Obama is overlooking those who can benefit from change the most, the poor. Why is it that the government must destroy a system by interfering in the private sector before it realizes that it shouldn’t have interfered in the first place? If Obama really wanted to help the poor he should leave tax credits for charitable contributions alone.

Steve Dunne, Drummer Police Pipe and Drums Band of Bergen County
Bergen Police Drummer Dies on Parade Route
By Doug Williams
It was a rare warm sunny Saint Patrick’s Day in New York. The Police Pipe and Drums Band of Bergen County, New Jersey began its place in the parade at 41st street. The band had led the historic “Fighting 69th” up 5th Avenue to 75th Avenue when tenor drummer Steve Dunne collapsed. Two members of the band immediately began CPR on Dunne while members of the band and the NYPD shielded the scene from the crowd. Despite their heroic efforts Dunne, age 59, was pronounced dead at St Luke’s Hospital at 12:36 p.m. According to an N.Y.P.D. spokesperson Dunne died of an apparent heart attack.
Sergeant Steve Dunne was a retired New York City Court Officer from the Bronx. He was highly regarded by his peers who described him as an old school Irish cop who could teach you a lot if you were willing to learn. He enjoyed Irish music and culture. Before joining the Bergen Police Band he played in a band with a group of court officers. He was known for his dedication as a performer. During a concert in Cleveland the neck strap on his drum broke and the drum hit the ground. According to the New York Times story on Dunne, as the drum bounced back up, and Dunne caught the drum with one hand and continued playing with the other, without missing a beat.
Dunne joined the band that year as a bass drummer and played with the band until a problem with his knee forced him to take a break in 2001. Dunne returned to the band in 2005 as a tenor drummer, which was a lighter instrument. In honor of Dunne the band boarded a bus to the New York City Armory on Lexington between 26th and 27th street and completed its performance.
After the parade the band formed up at the haven Pub and Restaurant on 51st Street. A lone bag piper led a procession that included Dunne’s drums, his sticks crossed on top of it, along with his hat, into the establishment. Like any true Irishmen his friends ordered his favorite drink, (which happens to be Guinness) and raised a pint in salute to Dunne and his drum.
A viewing was held on Friday, 20 March 2009 at the Riverdale on the Hudson Memorial Home, Bronx NY. Funeral Services were held the Following day at St. Margaret of Cortona R.C. Church Located 6000 Riverdale Avenue in the Borough of the Bronx, New York City. Steve Dunne is survived by two brothers Peter and Robert, and a sister Bonnie Dunne-Martin, all of Florida.
Sunny Skies Bless St. Patrick’s Day in New York
This year was the best St. Patrick’s Day that I have ever experienced. Over the course of twenty years I have been involved in numerous St. Patrick’s Day celebrations working behind the scenes planning the parade or taking care of security issues. This year thanks to the woman who allows me to live with her (She’s not big on bag pipes or Irish music) and father Bill O’Farrell I was able to not only march in the parade, but I was in the “Big Show” at that.
I spent the weeks before the parade inspecting the condition of my kilt and other accessories. I spent countless hours polishing my brass so that I would look my best. This year I opted to wear a Glengarry instead of my Irish Rifles Caubeen. (See pictures below.) Despite my best planning I managed to leave my sporran at home, but fortunately for me my father in-law was able to loan me one in a pinch.
We started the day off with a morning Mass at the division II Hibernian Hall of Suffolk County in Babylon, New York. The procession included a color guard and pipers. The Priest shared several funny stories during the Homily and reminded us to stick with a partner in case of an emergency. At the end of the swords used by the color guard were retired and the new ones were blessed by the Priest.
After the Mass I had the pleasure of meeting members of division II before taking the hour bus ride into the city. We departed the bus near Grand Central Station, where we stopped for a snack. I had a hard time keeping up with the rest of the group because I was constantly being greeted by past and present Marines who complimented me on my kilt. It gave me a deep sense of pride when a young Marine said that I was “still good to go sir.
After our side trip to Grand Central we went to our staging area on 46th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue where we waited for our turn to enter the parade. We were supposed to march around 1:00 p.m., so it was no surprise when 2:00 p.m. rolled around and we were still standing around. After all the running joke is that Ancient Order of Hibernians really stands for Any Old Hour. Sadly it would be much later that we learned about the tragic events involving Steve Dunne.
My mother in-law Mary and my wife Kathleen along with the Hibernian women of Suffolk County marched in front of the Saffron United Pipe Band, while the men of the Suffolk County Hibernians brought up the rear. Even though it was near the end of the Parade the crowds were still heavy along the streets with many in the crowd expressing their loyalty to Suffolk County. It was good to listen to the sounds of the Saffron United Pipes and Drums as we marched up 5th Avenue. At the risk of sounding biased I must say that there is nothing like the sound of the Marine Corps Hymn being played on the bag pipes. Sadly all good things must come to an end. After a little over two miles we came to the end of the line and made our way back to the buses for some food and beer.
I’m looking forward to one day playing the pipes in the parade one day but I still have to learn to play them. If you are reading this and you know of a bag pipe instructor in the Northern Virginia area, have them drop me a line in the comment section. If my wife tries to discourage you just pretend that you didn’t hear her.
I’ve attached a group of pictures of the parade below. I hope you enjoy them. Remember to get out and do something physical so that your loved ones can enjoy you a little while longer.

Democrats Lose sight of Constitutional Rights
Now that the Democrats are in power they are working overtime to advance their agenda while they still control both houses of congress. The Democrats agenda seeks to curb free speech, circumvent the second amendment, and further restrict religion. Unfortunately the Democrats have lost sight of the people’s rights under the Constitution.
The top priority of the Democrats is talk show radio. Senator Frank Durbin (D. IL) has attached an amendment to the D.C. voting rights act that would reinstate the “Fairness Doctrine, which was abolished by President Regan in 1987. The amendment to the bill contains vague language that states, “Certain affirmative actions are required of the FCC. Including actions to encourage and promote diversity in communication media ownership and to ensure that broadcast station licenses are used in the public interest.”
Many in the talk show industry view this as a means for Harry Reid and other Democrats to banish conservative radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and Sean Hannity from the airwaves by requiring that station owners allow equal time to present opposing viewpoints. Democrats hope that ownership of radio outlets will be broken up and owners would be leery of airing controversial radio host out of fear of fines, federal sanctions and lawsuits.
The “Fairness Doctrine” had its place in the 1947 when it was put in place so that free speech would not be infringed upon. In three separate cases the United States Supreme Court ruled that the doctrine was necessary to protect free speech, but in its third ruling the court stated that the constitutionality of the doctrine would have to be revisited because of the wide availability of media outlets. It should also be noted that Reid and Durbin also have their sights set on internet blogs as well.
So why are the Democrats afraid of talk radio when the main stream media already shows bias to the liberal agenda? Even though conservative talk shows dominate the market share on the airwaves, talk radio is only a small slice of the broadcasting network. Fear of losing power in Washington is the number one reason. Remember when Rush Limbaugh had a noon television show during the Clinton Administration? Rush Limbaugh covered the White Water scandal when the mainstream media showed little interest in the story. Limbaugh was also critical of the Brady Bill, and Universal Health care. While many disagreed with Limbaugh’s views he did provide a voice for disenfranchised voters which led to the angry white male vote during midterm elections in Clintons first term. After the Republicans gained control of Congress, the mainstream media moved Limbaugh’s show into the early A.M. hours which forced Limbaugh to cancel his TV show.
The Democrats attempt to silence Conservative Radio hosts will eventually find its way in the courts, and they will likely lose because the liberal viewpoint dominates the media. For those of you, who doubt my word, please review the December 2008 article regarding Supreme Court rulings on the “Fairness Doctrine”.
It would seem that the Obama administration has learned from the Nixon and Clinton administration and is willing to use the IRS as a tool to silence those who criticize the Obama administration. Michael Williams (no relation) writer of the Master of None Blog, and vocal critic of Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner. Geithner who you will recall blamed his failure to pay $48,000 in taxes to the IRS on a glitch in his Turbo Tax program. Williams created a website called taxcheat.com. The site sells a red self inking stamp that allows one to stamp the phrase tax cheat over Geithner’s signature on U.S. currency. The site carries the disclaimer that defacing money is illegal, but that’s the fun in civil disobedience. (My stamp should be in the mail soon.)
The second amendment will soon be facing attacks on several fronts. Attorney General Eric Holder JR. has stated that he intends to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired under the Bush administration. H.R. 45 AKA the Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 will give the U.S. Attorney General’s office to regulate licensure, sale, registration, transfer and possession of a firearm. The act prohibits ownership of a firearm if you are not licensed under this act. The act is still being written, but it places a frightening number restriction on gun ownership to the point that the government can ban gun ownership for almost any reason. Gun advocates feel that this is a back door effort to undermine the recent Supreme Court ruling over gun ownership in the District of Columbia. Barack Obama has indicated that he will sign this bill even though he stated that he had no desire to take firearms from gun owners. The N.R.A. is expected to challenge this bill if it becomes law and they feel that gun owners will prevail in this case.
Religion is another favorite target of Democrats. In Connecticut Senator Andrew J. McDonald, (D-Stamford) and Representative Michael Lawlor, (D-East Haven) introduced S.B. 1098. The bill would allow the State of Connecticut to take over the finances of the Catholic Church. The bill was introduced because of an incident where a Priest stole 1.4 million dollars from his parish. The bill sparked public outrage by Catholics, and has been tabled at the request of the State Attorney General’s Office while the constitutionality of the bill is reviewed.
BishopWilliam E. Lori of Bridgeport (BridgePort Diocese) has publicly stated that the bill is a “thinly veiled attempt to silence the Catholic Church on the important issues of the day, such as same-sex marriage.” This sentiment was also echoed by Danbury state Senator Michael McLachlan, (R-24th District). McLachlan says that he is receiving numerous calls from Catholics and non-Catholics alike about the ramifications of this Bill. State Senator Minority Leader John McKinney (R-Fairfield) calls the bill an unconstitutional assault on religious freedoms.” Despite constitutional concerns about the bill the Democrats have chosen to table the bill instead of killing it.
The assault on religious freedom is not limited to the state of Connecticut. The Economic Stimulus Bill that was recently signed by Obama contains a clause that prohibits prayer in any university building that was built with federal funds. The bill would even prevent your child from praying in his or her dorm room.
You may not agree with Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck or Sean Hannity. You may even believe that only the police should have guns. You may even be an atheist, but you should be concerned that our constitutional rights are slowly being taken away.
It was free speech and a free press that allowed the country to learn about Nixon’s involvement in Watergate. If we allow government to silence the voice of someone because they disagree with the ruling party, or we just find their viewpoints offensive; we will no longer have nor will we deserve a democracy.
As far as the right to keep and bear arms goes, nobody is forcing you to own one; however, we the people must fear a government that fears our guns. This country exists today because the people were able to raise a militia and defeat King George. I won’t argument gun control here, but I will raise the point that Hitler banned gun ownership, and we know the rest of that story.
You may have been born an atheist and have vowed to die an atheist, but isn’t it nice to know that you live in a country where you have the freedom to change your mind, or just be who you are without fear of persecution. Freedom of religion and separation of church and state are an important part of our constitution and must be protected. We will always have ideological differences in our culture, but we must learn to agree to disagree.
As a free society we cannot allow a dominant political party, whether it be Democrat or Republican to erode our constitutional rights. Today we give up a few rights to the democrats, and tomorrow we give a few rights to the Republicans. Somewhere down the line we give up the rest of our rights and then we’ll have no freedom. You may not agree with my religious or political beliefs, but one thing is certain; whether you are a Democrat or Republican you have an obligation to ask our Congress not to pass any bill that erodes our constitutional rights. If we do not then one day we will have no freedom, nor will we deserve it.

Doug’s Stimulus Plan
You’ve all heard my theories about what is wrong with the economy so I won’t bore you with my opinions as to the cause except to say that both political parties created this mess. I don’t believe that we need to bankrupt our country to fix the economy. The best way to fix the economy is for the government to allow the market to correct itself, reduce taxes, and develop jobs programs that will create permanent, not temporary jobs. Unfortunately the Obama administration is more interested in the Democratic political agenda and not the economy. So now we come to the point where my friends and co-workers ask “What would you do Doug?”
Since the people are demanding action by the government, my answer is to keep it simple and do it right. The first part of the problem is the mortgage crisis. For those who are behind on their mortgages, I say turn in the keys and walk away while you still can. Allow the banks to sell the houses at auction and write off the difference. In the case of subprime mortgages the government is responsible because we didn’t learn from our mistakes in the 1980′s and pass regulations that would have prevented the same mistakes from being repeated. We knew that the Subprime market posed a problem, yet we failed to address it, so yes we are obligated to buy up the bad loans and get them off the books. The way this works is simple, buy the home from the mortgage holder and allow the home owner to vacate the premises with a neutral credit rating. The government will lose money buying an underwater property and selling it, but it would be a first step in removing toxic assets from the banking system.
My more liberal friends would say that I am heartless by pushing people out of their homes, but they fail to see the big picture. The goal is to help the market correct itself by removing bad mortgages, and allowing people to move into more affordable housing. The other factor that had a negative effect on our economy was excessive debt. Granted a person may have to rent a few more years before they can move into another house, but when the time comes they will have paid down their credit cards, and bought a house they can really afford.
There will be some people who for one reason or another can never afford a traditional mortgage. My solution would be to model a program after Habitat for Humanity that would build affordable public housing for renters and for low income home owners. The plan would start with rental housing. For those who choose to own a home, they would be required to have a good rental history for at least five years. The program would then refurbish older homes or build new affordable homes along the same guidelines as Habitat for Humanity. The program would ease the housing crunch as well as provide job training for those who show the aptitude for the construction industry.
The second area of my plan involves Wall Street. Wall Street and the banking industry have shown that deregulation cannot work. Where money is involved greed and corruption will almost always triumph. New regulations would have to come to Wall Street and the banking industry to curb corporate fraud. Since the SEC has looked the other way (the Bernie Madoff scandal) an internal affairs division for the SEC would be formed. New regulations would also be put into effect that would curb speculators so that we won’t have a repeat of last summers oil prices.
The third area of my stimulus plan comes in the form of tax credits, tax cuts and job training. Offer a 35% tax credit for any U.S. company that moves its operation back to the United States. Give that company an additional 10% tax credit for providing job training that result in permanent jobs for American workers. For companies such as Dell who provide a service that is essential to American security interests, provide them with an additional 10% credit for ten years for bringing their operations back to the United States. Lower taxes on other businesses so that they can afford to operate. Defense contractors that provide job training and permanent placement for American workers would be given preference in the biding process.
In order to stimulate the economy I would call for a six month freeze on payroll taxes. The Bush Tax cuts would remain in effect. The alternative minimum tax and the estate tax would be repealed.
With the exception of federal law enforcement and the military there would be a one year hiring freeze on government positions. All government agencies would be required to trim 10% from their budget over the next four years. Any budget surplus would be applied to the Social Security and Medicare programs, the rest would go towards the deficit. I would also reverse the Nixon Policy that took us away from the gold standard.
Small businesses would be eligible for capital improvement loans up to $350,000 with a 1% interest rate so that they can update their operations which would give them the ability to compete with bigger operations. These businesses would be able to provide jobs and services to the local community.
As far as bailouts for banks or businesses go, there would be none. If a business fails because of a poor business plan it makes no sense to throw good money after bad trying to keep it afloat. When a business fails it will either be replaced by another company, or several companies will pick up the customer base and fill the void, that is how a free market bests works.

My economic stimulus plan is simple common sense. Don’t spend more than you make, and don’t gouge the tax payer. The cost to the tax payer is a fraction of the Obama plan. If a guy that can barely keep his own checkbook straight can come up with a simple stimulus plan, why can’t the Obama administration?
In December of 2008 I predicted that we would be in a full blown depression by 2011. Given the current spending spree the Democrats are on I am revising my prediction to 2010 for the year we enter the depression. I just don’t think that the Obama administration will admit it until 2011. In the next six months the Dow will improve for maybe 3-6 months, and then it will fall well below the 5000 mark. When that happens, hang on to your wallets because the Obama administration will raise taxes on everyone.
Jane Justice
I spent the last three years working for Aureus Medical as a traveling Respiratory Therapist. Aureus sent me to some really neat facilities where I had the privilege of working with and meeting some wonderful people. My first assignment At Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa set the standard of what a workplace should be largely because of a remarkable Nurse by the Name of Jane Justice.
Like most businesses today hospital administrators have to do more in order to keep the doors open. Jane did her job well and she never complained. She was well liked by both patients and staff alike, and she should be the benchmark that bosses should strive to meet.
I truly enjoyed working for her, and I always kept in touch with her in case she had a need for a traveling therapist. Sadly Jane died in a traffic accident on 21 February 2009. My heart and prayers go out to Jane’s family and friends. Whoever fills the position Jane left at Jenny Edmundson will has some big shoes to fill.

Instead of stuffing your pie hole with fast food at work or school take the time to make a healthy lunch which includes some low fat snacks to eat. Sugar free Jell-O, fruits, and vegetables are better that a burrito loaded down with a lot of junk. It’s good for the body and the brain.
Speaking of healthy brains, sitting behind a desk all day can hurt your productivity. Every hour or so get up and do some deep knee bends and some stretches. You’ll not only refresh your mind but you’ll improve your performance as well. While you’re at it get rid of the pogey bait that you have stashed in your desk drawer. Now drop and give me 25!
Special Marine Birthday Issue
If you can read this thank a teacher. If you can read this in English thank a Veteran.
“Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But, the Marines don’t have that problem.” President Ronald Reagen; 1985.
Welcome to my Parade Deck. My name is Doug Williams. If you have bothered to read my rules do it now. Today is 10 November 2008, the 233rd Birthday of the United States Marine Corps. Happy Birthday Marines.
By now you may have guessed that at one time I was in the Marine Corps. I enlisted in the Corps at the tail end of the Vietnam war at the age of seventeen when it was not a popular thing to do. I proud to have been in the Marines and I am proud of my fellow Marines both past and present. (Once a Marine always a Marine)
On 10 November 1775, the Continental Congress commissioned Samuel Nicholas (the first Commandant) to raise two battalions of Marines. He used Tun Tavern as a recruiting station and he appointed Robert Mullan to the job of chief recruiter. Many youg men were to the tavern with free cold beer, where they were presented with the opportunity to join the Marines. Today young men and women go to a recruiting station (minus the cold beer of course) and are presented with the same opportunity to become Marines.
The Marine Corps motto is “Semper Fidelis” which is Latin for Always Faithful was adopted in 1883 Most Marines shorten the term to Semper Fi to voice loyalty and commitment to their fellow Marines. A Marines Character (“what you are in the dark,” Heritage Press International) is defined by three Marine Corps: honor, courage, and commitment. A Marine earns the title for life which is why they say “Once a Marine, always a Marine.”
Marines have many nicknames suchas Leatherneck, Gyrene, Jarhead and Devil Dogs. The terms Gyrene and Jarhead were meant as insults, but Marines being who they are proudly embraced these names. The term Leatherneck refers to the leather collar Marines wore to protect their jugular veins from saber slashes. In WWI the Germans referred to the Marines as “tuefel hunden,” (devil dogs) in their official reports because of their fighting skills, It was not long after the was when recruiting posters with a snarling bulldog wearing a Marine Corps helmet began to appear on recruiting posters everywhere.
In 1922 BrigadierGeneral Smedley D. Butler signed documents enlisting the first bulldog into the Marines for life which is how the Marine mascot came to be. The first Mascots name was Pvt Jiggs who rose quickly to the rank of Sergeant Major. Jiggs died on 9 January 1927 and he was interred with full military honors. From the 1930′s-1950′s as a tribute to Smedley Butler. In the 1950′s Smedley was renamed Chesty in honor in honor of Lieutenant General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller JR. Chesty’s official home became the Marine Barracks in Washington and Chesty made his firt public appearance in canine Dress Blues on 5 July 1957.
The Marines are rich in tradition. In 1921 Marine Commandant, General John A Lejune issued Marine Corps order No. 47, Series 192. The order summarized the history, mission and tradition of the Corps. It directed that the order be read to all Marines on 10 November to honor the Corps. The first formal dance was at the Marine Barracks at Ft. Mifflin, PA in 1923. The first formal ball took place in Philadelphia in 1925. Like all Marine traditions the birthday ball has grown and taken on a life of its own.
If you live in Virginia or plan to visit soon it’s well worth your time to visit the Marine Corps Museum which is located off of I-95 exit 150 in Quantico, VA. Many of the exhibits are interactive and allows one to appreciate the Marine lifestyle. They have their own version of a mess hall (without the D.I. in your face), and for those of you who prefer a beer with your meal feel free to visit Tun Tavern. Of course no visit to the Museum would be complete without a trip to the gift shop. A word of advice to parents, if you can’t control your children don’t be surprised when a Marine steps in and squares them away.
When you see a Marine tell them Happy Birthday and don’t forget to thank them for their service since tomorrow is Veterans Day.
Quotes by Marines
“For over 221 years our Corps has done two things for this great Nation. We make Marines, and we win battles. [Gen Charles C. Krulak, USMC (CMC): 5 May 1997]
“Marines die, that’s what we’re here for. But the Marine Corps lives forever. And that means YOU live forever. [the mythical GySgt. Hartman, USMC; portrayed by GySgt. R. Lee Ermey, a Marine Corps Drill Instructor using his own choice of words in Full Metal Jacket, 1987]
Obama maps out his economic stimulus plan
By Doug Williams
In Chicago on Friday President-elect Barack Obama met with a seventeen member brain trust of key economic advisers. Immediately after the meeting Obama made it clear that he expects Congress to have passed an economic stimulus, or it will be the first thing he accomplishes as President.
Obama outlined his vision for the middle-class for the press. He said that his rescue plan will create jobs for the middle-class. President-elect Obama has pledged to extend unemployment benefits, provide relief to small businesses, and help the ailing auto industry. Obama characterized the auto industry as “the backbone of the economy and a critical part of our attempt to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.” Obama vows to act quickly to implement a plan that will stabilize our economy. He was quoted as saying “I’m confident that a new president can have an enormous impact. That’s why I ran for president.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.CA) agrees with President Obama’splans to bailout the auto industry, and that should be few strings attached This has raised concerns among fiscal Conservatives who believe that the country cannot borrow its way to prosperity. Fox News analysts Neil Cavuto and Governor Mike Huckabee are saying that Congress should stop the bailouts. Cavuto and Huckabee argue that the best way to fix the economy is to cut spending, cut capital gains tax, and to give tax breaks to corporations so that the economy can be stimulated. Governor Huckabee has said that the recent 150 billion dollar tax stimulus (that we borrowed from the Chinese) did little for our economy but, it did benefit the Chinese because most of the stuff Americans bought was made in China.
In his “Common Sense” segment on 11/7 Cavuto called for the resignation of all C.E.O.’s who come to congress for a loan. Cavuto stated that is was the incompetence of corporate executives that is responsible for our economic mess and that for the good of their company a C.E.O. would do the right thing by resigning as a condition financial assistance. There should be no bonus or golden parachute to reward their incompetence. Cavuto said “If a C.E.O.’s resignation was a condition of government loans, then you would see fewer executives coming to Washington with their hats in hand.”
President-elect Obama has promised to watch the bailout programs carefully to make sure that the programs are not being mismanaged. He also promised to give states money to rebuild our infrastructure to that more jobs will be created. “The cost of fixing our economy will not be cheap.” Obama’s statement has raised the likelihood that the promised tax breaks for families making less than $250,000 will be put on hold. Many believe that Obama left himself an escape clause when he said, “ I think that the plan that we’ve put forward is the right one, but obviously over the next several weeks and months, we’re going to be continuing to take a look at the data and see what’s taking place in the economy as a whole.”
In the late 1980′s and 1990′s the Canadian government entered many similar deals with private businesses that were suffering financially. Many of the company’s went bankrupt for a variety of reasons. The Canadian government was left holding the bag while the private sector was able to walk away. This caused a considerable strain on the Canadian economy and gave rise to the temporary additional Goods and Service Tax. This tax is still in effect today and will no doubt remain a permanent fixture in Canada.

President-elect Obama claims to have a plain that will responsibly end our in Iraq within 16 months. That sounds good during a campaign but in reality it’s not possible. The far left kooks (Pelosi, Reed, and Murtha to name a few) would love to surrender in Iraq and just wash their hands of the whole affair. We are faced with several questions. Will President-elect Obama listen to our military commanders in Iraq, or to the Iraqi government for that matter? If he chooses to ignore sound advice and chooses to be a puppet for Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will “Blue Dog Democrats” step in and bring him under control? Only time will tell.
On Saturday Iraq’s deputy prime minister said his country still needs the U.S. Military to ensure security. The Iraqi’s are currently negotiating a deal that would remove U.S. troops from Iraq’s cities by 30 June and withdraw them by 2012. Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh says that it’s important that the United States signs this agreement. He was quoted as saying “If the U.S. pulls out of Iraq too soon it will leave the country in a vacuum. I agree with the deputy prime minister. The Iraqi’s have made considerable gains towards their goal of self governance. It’s time to stop the political bickering. The question of whether or not the Iraq war was a mistake is a dead issue. The only fact that matters is that we invaded a country and removed a cruel dictator. Mankind has a well documented history of invading countries. The invasions were mostly successful but shortlived because governments fail to make a good planof occupation and transition to a new nt.
War is an ugly business. Its participants are required to commit acts of violence on behalf of those who can’t. Those who carry out their mission do so at a high price, often for an ungrateful country (examples: Roman soldiers under Cesar, or U.S. troops in Vietnam.) When a government is overthrown there will always be chaos amongst the people because of division within the ranks of the new power. As defenders of freedom and democracy we have a moral obligation to stay in Iraq and help clean up the mess we made. It is unacceptable to say we’re leaving because people in our country or the international community no longer believes in your cause. We owe it to the Iraqi people and our brave men and women who have already paid a high price to help the Iraqi’s help themselves.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said that is will be necessary to make revisions in their new constitution. These revisions are necessary in order to have a stronger central federal government which are essental to the country’s security and stability. For those of you who are critical of the fact that it’s taken so long for the Iraqi’s to form a good constitution allow me to give you a refresher in American History. The American Revolution ended on 13 September 1783 when the Treaty of Paris was signed. It was not until 21 June 1788 New Hampshire became the 9th state to ratify our Constitution. Iraq is a culturally divided country that has managed to set aside their differences and come to some form of agreement on a Constitution in less than five years. That’s quite an accomplishment compared to our country. They are making every effort to control their destiny and the world should stand behind them.
President-elect Obama spoke at great lengths about the cost of running two wars and the fact that Iraq has a 70 billion dollar surplus. What he didn’t tell you is that Iraq’s financial ministers are at a loss on how to get it to the people. Even when Sadam was in power, Iraq’s financial system was in poor condition at best. When he was in power Sadam took in a lot of money but gave very little back to his country. Most of Iraq’s financial institutions were dysfunctional and their social programs were plagued with incompetence and corruption. When the invasion was launched Iraq’s economic infrastructure collapsed. The last remaining obstacle to Iraq’s stability is to help them build a new financial infrastructure. This could be best accomplished by utilizing the services of our bright but unemployed businessmen who were a casualty of the financial meltdown. They would not only be employed again but they would play an important role in Iraq’s future.
As a Nation we cannot have a revolving door option for sending troops into Iraq. Our only hope for maintaining stability in Iraq and earn the trust and respect of the people is to do the job right the first time. If we leave Iraq in a mess, we not only lose an Ally in the region but we set the stage for religious extremism and intolerance to come back with a vengence. Once again history will repeat itself and the United States and Israel will be the targets of attacks both domesticly and abroad. You can rest assured that these attacks will be wosre than 9/11.
That’s all I have for today. I want to thank you for reading my blog. My next posting will cover the Fairness Doctrine and how it impacts the first amendment. I will also be sounding off about media bias and the affect it has on the industry’s credibility. As usual I look forward to your comments.
Do you find your self sitting at your computer or in front on the TV every day? Is shoving food in your pie hole the only exercise you get. Well I have a solution for you problem sweetheart. Put down that sandwich, and turn off your computer for a while. It’ll be there when you get back. If there’s something woth watching on T.V. hit the DVR option get your but out of that recliner and watch it later. Get out and do some P.T. and while your at it drop and give me 25. If you have a profile that prohibits P.T. then get out and walk the mall, or get with your doctor to find something you can do. Obesity, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, and diabetes are no laughing matter. Remember you have only one life, be healthy and live life to the fullest.

Last year I turned fifty, so it was no surprise when at my yearly physical, my doctor uttered the words it’s colonoscopy time. He said it was particularly important for me to do this because I’ve had a few skin tags removed. According to my doctor, there is a correlation between skin tags and polyps in the colon. Naturally I was a little leery of this. I asked myself was for real, or was he trying to scare me into the procedure. After all, no one in their right mind wants something that is built like the Hubble Telescope inserted into an orifice that is clearly marked exit only. Over the past two years I have known somebody who has lost a family member to colon cancer and I have lost patients as well, so I knew I had to quit whining and just schedule the procedure.
I was relieved to discover that the clinic I was going to, used Propofol as an amnesiac and not the old standby Versed. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure, Versed works well but it can leave you pretty goofy for the rest of the day. Propofol (or milk of amnesia as the more jaded members of my profession call it) works well and it’s metabolized quickly by the body. That meant that after starving for more than 12 hours I could be out of the clinic by ten in the morning and having a steak and whiskey for lunch no later than 11:15.
I was now OK with the procedure since I wasn’t going to remember a thing. My comfort level however was short lived when my wife brought home the prep-kit I needed to take before the procedure. I nowsome insight to what a death row inmate goes through. At 4:00 PM I had my last meal, followed by my last cup of coffee until the next day. (That’s not a good thing for me or anybody near me.) At five o’clock I started drinking a substance that may have been Yak urine. (I’ve never had the pleasure, but I’m pretty sure that’s what the stuff would taste like.) The label says “Go Lytely” but trust me that’s the furthest from the truth. I wonder if It’s not too late to have one of the local ambulance chasers file a class action suit for deceptive advertising on my behalf. I quickly learned two very important things about this product. That is not gas, and stay within three feet of the toilet. After three hours of misery I also came to realize that I wanted to meet the jerk that invented the stuff make him drink four or five glasses of the stuff. I also believe that I may have done penance for any sins I may commit over the next ten years.
After the procedure was over I discovered that my doctor was right. I had two polyps that were removed. I was relieved to know that not only was I cancer free, I would be around to embarrass my friends and family for a long time. By now I’m sure you’re wondering why I’m sharing this information with you. The answer my friends is simple, it doesn’t matter if you’re male or female; If you are fifty it’s time to get your colonoscopy. If there’s a family history of colorectal cancer and you are under fifty, then you should talk to your physician. If found early colon cancer can be successfully treated. Besides, if a manly guy such as I can endure the trauma of evacuation and inspection, then so can you.
If you’re so insistent on pushing food in your pie hole do yourself a favor. Put that bag of chips back in the cabinet, throw that candy away. Grab an apple, raw vegetables or some other healthy snack that is high in fiber. While you’re at it, get out and do some P.T. You’ll not only feel better but you’ll be around long enough to spend your children’s inheritance. Since you’re still standing there your hand in that bag of chips and that vacant stare on your face, drop and give me twenty-five. Well any day now sweetheart.

Our troops fight so that you can whine and protest about the war. When you see a Veteran or a member of our military please thank them for all the personal sacrifices they have made for your freedom to express your opinion. For those of you who still think the United States are somehow villains in the war on terror and that we owe the world some kind of apology, you are more than welcome to live in France.

Doug’s Opinion
“My childhood memories of Thanksgiving and the lessons that I learned.”
I woke up last Wednesday morning and realized that Thanksgiving would soon be upon us. As I sat at the kitchen table waiting for my coffee to brew I began to reflect on my Thanksgiving memories both good and bad. My family was a diverse collection of individuals. We had Protestants, Catholics, and it was rumored that we even had a few Jews in the bunch (No one would admit to being Jewish because we lived in the southern part of the country). The personalities in our family were equally diverse and colorful as well, which made for some interesting get-togethers.
I remember the Thanksgiving before my parents divorced. I was five years old and we went to my grandparents on my mother’s side of the family for dinner. The order of the day was for the children and the men to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade while the women fixed dinner. My grandmother was the undisputed General, and my Aunt Myrtle was her second in command. I learned that my grandmother had eight general orders that we were expected to learn. The first general order that was quickly learned was to stay out of the kitchen. The second general order was to stay away from the dining room until you were called. I quickly learned that a violation of this rule was punishable by a spatula across the backside and a referral to my father, who gave me “the look” and the warning to stay out of the lion’s den. (They had a more realistic definition of child abuse back then.)
While my brother, cousins, and I watched the parade the men sat around and drank coffee. At some point my grandfather would pull out a can of Copenhagen, and that would be the signal for the rest of the men to breakout the cigarettes and pipes which would inevitable cause my grandmother to invoke the third general order. “If ya’ll are going to smoke open the windows.” Shortly after that my grandfather would open the bar and the men would begin to tell their stories. The order of the stories was always the same. Everyone would share something about the depression and then move on to the war.
My Uncle Louie’s stories were my favorite. Uncle Louie was a WWI Veteran. His stories were a mixture of fact and fiction that would entertain me until my 25th birthday when he passed away. My Uncle Johnny would talk about his Navy days, and my Dad’s Father would tell us about being a Marine in the south pacific during WWII. Throughout the entire event the crowd got bigger, and as the whisky flowed the lies became bolder. At some point my Uncle Louie would crack one of his more colorful jokes (which I didn’t understand but I laughed at it anyway) which caused my grandmother (who was in the kitchen) to bellow out the fourth general order, “There’re children in the house.”
Meanwhile in the lion’s den things weren’t going as well as things in the living room. The kitchen was quickly filing up to capacity with female friends and relatives. My grandmother and Aunt Myrtle were working out the logistics of what dish went where, and it what order would it be heated up. They were doing a wonderful job of organizing the meal but they were unable to prevent feathers from being ruffled. At some point during the day the tensions between siblings, cousins, and in-laws boiled over. The “B” word was invoked, which caused my grandmother to drop the “F” bomb, and an argument ensued. For the next hour the offenders and the victims would occupy camps in the front and back yard. This would require the male relatives to go outside and console their wives. They would then be required to confront the male of the opposite camp about their wife’s behavior, and then go back and console their wife’s some more. Finally my grandmother would lose her patience and invoke the fifth general order. “If ya’ll don’t knock it off, I’m going to throw dinner in the creek and send everybody home.” Everybody knew grandma was mad and that she really would dump the stuff in the creek. Besides, they didn’t have Denny’s or the Waffle House back then, so it was either make up and eat or go hungry.
The camps would break up and everybody would focus on setting all the tables. The elders would eat in the dining room, the other adults would sit at the table that was set up in den and the kids would be sent to the living room to eat at the card tables. But not before the sixth general order was issued. We all crowded into the kitchen and said Grace. My grandmother would pass out glasses of wine to the adults, and half glasses to those ten or older and raise a toast that expressed her gratitude for all of her friends and family. After the toast we would then stand in line and make our way through the serving line and enjoy our meal.
When we had all eaten our fill everyone was expected to do their part to clean up before the seventh general order would be issued. “It’s time to decorate the tree.” This was our favorite time of the day. The Christmas tree would be decorated. The children would get one candy cane and we would gather around the Sears catalog and make our Christmas wishes known. The adults would gather around us and tell us that we would have to ask Santa Claus for the presents, and they would remind us to be good or we would only get a lump of coal and switches in our stockings.
Now that dinner was over everyone was happy. There was no fighting and my Uncle Johnny was in my grandfather’s chair snoring away, which was the signal that the evening had come to an end. My grandmother’s eighth general order would be that we have to do this again this Christmas.
After Brookly AFB closed most of my family received orders to go to different parts of the country. My mother became the general and the holiday behavior was just as neurotic as it was in my grandmother’s kitchen. The house was packed and noisy, somebody always got mad and went off to pout, everybody ate too much, and there was always the promise to get together and do it again.
During my early adult years I spent my first Thanksgiving away from home. I remember being thankful for the pound cake and fruit cocktail that was in my c-rations and for the company of my buddies. As we ate I told everybody about the neurotic behavior in my household during the holidays. One by one my buddies shared stories of the same neurotic holiday behavior in their household. I began to understand that maybe my family wasn’t so abnormal after all and politely excused myself from the group. I didn’t want to make eye contact with anyone because homesickness had set in, and I was afraid that my fellow Marines would see my tears. That night I wrote my mother a letter to tell her how thankful I was for all that she had given us when we were growing up.
I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and remind you to tell your family how fortunate you are to have them in your lives. Remember, we can choose our friends but not our family.
Just because it’s Thanksgiving doesn’t mean that you get to blow off PT. As soon as you finish stuffing your face you need to go outside and walk off all those calories. The fresh air and exercise will do you good.
I will be back on schedule next week. In our next issue I will cover the handouts, excuse me I mean bailouts that the government is giving out. I will also talk about term limits and media bias. Until then, have a good week.

Assaults on Border Patrol Agents on the rise
The increased demand for border security following the attacks on 9/11 has led to an increase in assaults on Border Patrol Agents. In 2004 there were 384 assaults on Border Patrol agents. As of this print date the level of violence has increased 286%for a total of 1097 assaults on Border Patrol agents. (Oscar Saldana, U.S. Border Patrol) The level of violence is blamed on the increased Border Patrol presence along the U.S. Mexican Border and the desperation of human and drug smugglers, who are frustrated by the change in tactics of the Border Patrol. In the past, agents usually apprehended smugglers and illegal aliens further away from the border, but with 9/11 there were call for stronger border security which included a higher visibility along the border. By the end of this fiscal year it is expected that the Border Patrols ranks will increase to 18,000, most of which will be deployed along the U.S.-Mexican border.
Since 1919 one hundred five Agents have been killed in the line of duty; two of which died this year. On 19 January 2008 Senior Border
Patrol Agent Luis Alberto Aguilar was deliberately struck by a vehicle he was attempting to stop. Border Patrol Agent Jarod Dittman was killed in a one car rollover. Further information of these agents is available at http://www.odmp.org/ (click on personalize-U.S. Government-select agency- U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Customs/Border Patrol).
Most of the assaults are classified as “rockings” which is a popular style of assault used by the Palestinians against Israeli troops. Drug smugglers and Coyotes (human smugglers) often throw rocks or other objects at the agents. These attacks have caused serious injury to agents, including a fractured shoulder blade. In an interview with USA Today Agent Shawn Moran, vice president of the local Border Patrol union in Imperial Beach, CA describes the rockings as a “biblical stoning”.
On 9 February 2008 five agents working the San Diego sector found a neck level wire stretched between a double fence that runs along the border. The wire was clearly designed to cut the throat of an agent driving an all terrain vehicle.
The stepped up attacks against Border Patrol Agents has been a source of frustration for the rank and file members of the Border Patrol union. If an agent fires his weapon at someone he/she feels has put his life in jeopardy, runs the risk of being prosecuted by the Department of Justice. Currently Ignacio Ramos and Jose Campeon are facing 11 and 12 years sentences for shooting a drug smuggler, and agent Nicholas Corbett is currently on trial for second degree murder in the shooting death of Francisco Dominguez Rivera along the Arizona section of the border. Corbett claims he shot Rivera in self defense after Rivera threatened him with a rock.
The incident drew harsh criticism from the Mexican government and has garnered the attention of human-rights group -Border Action Network. The Border Patrol Union says that the case is overblown and it should not have been brought to trial. The fear of being second guessed in a court of law has added one more factor that an agent must consider in a split second before choosing deadly force as an option for self defense.
Faced with increasing violence by Mexican drug cartels, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the D.E.A., and other federal, state, local law enforcement agencies and Mexican law enforcement agencies have joined forces in the Border Enforcement Security Taskforces (BEST) program: one of several groups that was established or expanded to implement the Security and Prosperity Partnership for North America. The BEST program is now in operational along the U.S.-Mexican border. As a result of the Best program 2,066.79 pounds of cocaine, 52,518.54 pounds of marijuana, and an undisclosed amount of hand grenades, Improvised explosive devices, a cache of AK-47 assault rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition were confiscated.
To underscore the seriousness of the dangers Border Patrol agents face, San Diego BEST agents discovered two sophisticated tunnels on the border near Otay Mesa, CA. For the fiscal year 2007, more than 30 cross border tunnels have been discovered. (Source, The Cornerstone Report, June 2008). The tunnels pose an increased threat for the Border Patrol because of the potential to be ambushed by heavily armed drug smugglers or terrorists in possession of biological or nuclear materials.
ICE has deployed the use of Ground Penetrating Radar in an effort to detect tunnels, but the radar can only penetrate 40 feet. (The last tunnel was discovered 80 feet below ground.) As Ice gets better at detecting tunnels, drug smugglers have improved their expertise in concealing the tunnels which makes it even more dangerous for Border Patrol agents.
In June of 2004 President Bush authorized the use of unarmed aerial drones along the Arizona-Mexican border. The drones can fly up to 90 miles an hour and detect movement up to 15 miles away. The drone’s ability to provide real time intelligence has made it easier, more efficient and safer, for agents to respond to illegal activity in the area. The Department of Homeland Security has expressed a desire to utilize more aerial drones along the border, but the policy faced the hurdle of airspace safety concerns.
According to Ian Gregor, Communications Manager, FAA Western-Pacific Region: “The FFA and DHS have reached an agreement on establishing an appropriate safety infrastructure for the continued use of the Predator B unmanned Aircraft System. Without going into specific details, the agreement emphasizes things such as the need to conduct risk/hazard assessments and to establish formalized, ongoing activities to maintain and promote safety.”
As the Department of Homeland Security expands its efforts to strengthen our border, the criminal element will no doubt double its efforts to circumvent the progress of the DHS. If the trend of violence is any indicator, the Border Patrol will likely continue to report even more assaults over the next few years.

I want my Government Bailout too.
The Bush administration and House Democrats have formed an unlikely alliance over the bailout of the “Big Three”. Senate Republicans have demanded that the auto industry make some serious concessions, which include reorganizing under Chapter 11, as well as concessions from the UAW, and industry creditors. As long as the auto industry refuses to develop a strong business plan, which includes developing a stronger bottom line, Senate Republicans have the obligation to stall any bailout legislation. Eventually the auto industry will wise up and do the right thing, or when the Obama administration gets into office, an auto industry bailout will be forced upon the American Taxpayer.
This new system of bailouts and entitlements has led me to formulate a new plan on behalf of taxpayers all over the country. I will appear in front of Congress hat in hand, where I will use the same fear-mongering tactics as the financial sector and the auto industry have used before me.
I will tell Congress that the taxpayer is unable to help stimulate the economy because we are too deep in debt and we are in need of a bailout. I will argue that if we do not get a bailout the nation will be plunged into an “Economic Depression.” The idea behind the bailout (Handout) is that the government should provide enough money to cover credit card debt, student loans, mortgage payments, and car loans. After we receive the bailout, the consumer would be able to go out and spend more money, thereby jump starting the economy. The money should not be considered a loan since we are entitled, and we will be saving the economy from certain ruin. When Congress asks who will pay for the bailout, my answer will be that instead of raising taxes we can pass the problem on to our children. This bailout makes about as much sense as all the other bailouts that Congress has approved so far and the consequences will be the same.
It’s time for Washington to wake up and do what’s right for our country and quit rewarding greed and incompetence.
This week I am attending the Respiratory Care Congress in Anaheim, CA, so my next issue will focus on the latest trends in Respiratory Therapy issues and advancements. I have received some interesting emails about dud Christmas gifts, so keep them coming at rezboy0311@gmail.com.

Even though this is considered politically incorrect, I’m going to say it anyway: Jesus is the reason for the season, so please think about those less fortunate than you and help brighten someone’s day. Don’t forget that you owe it to yourself to participate in some kind of PT program, so quit stuffing food in your pie hole, and drop and give me 25.

The 54th Annual Respiratory Congress
For those of you who are not Respiratory Therapists, the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) holds an annual for conference Respiratory Therapists and Nurses that allow them the opportunity to view the latest product lines from vendors, as well as earn the continuing education credits that are required by their licensing agency. This year the conference was held in Anaheim, California.
The state of our economy had an impact on the number of attendees (The attendance totals are not available as of yet.) but one vendor guessed that the numbers may be down by as much as twenty-five percent. While the vendors who are at the conference are financially solvent, they are feeling the strain of our economy as well. The high cost of shipping forced vendors to cut costs by not bringing product literature or samples to the conference. The freebies that have been available in the past were limited to tote bags and ball point pens. This year the vendors chose to scan the badges of attendees and ship only literature and products that we expressed an interest in. This was more than just a smart business move. We are the first to admit to shipping two or more boxes of product literature home, only to have half of it find its way to the local landfill.
This year’s product lines were geared towards disaster response which is a hot topic in the health care industry. Vendors have adapted to the increasing demand for affordable, portable, and in some cases disposable equipment that will meet the needs of a biological or nuclear incident. The Parade Deck is currently waiting for product information from portable ventilator and oxygen concentrator manufacturers before offering any opinion about the product.
The most promising new therapy involves the use of therapeutic levels of carbon monoxide during surgery for transplant recipients. In small therapeutic doses carbon monoxide has been found to improve tissue healing process following organ transplant surgery. The AARC has announced that this lecture as well as the other breakfast lectures will be transcribed and published in March of 2009.

Bush’s Bailout passes the buck to Obama
Not wanting to be viewed as another Herbert Hoover, President Bush used money set aside for the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) for a bridge loan to keep GM and Chrysler afloat until March of 2009. The terms of the bailout call for concessions from creditors and the UAW, and it implies that Chrysler and GM must file Chapter 11 bankruptcy in order to be financially viable. If conditions of the loans are not met, then the automakers must pay back the loan immediately.
The loan conditions are subject to change under the Obama administration, and it’s expected that Union friendly democrats will drastically alter the agreement. This is a win-win situation for Bush and the auto industry. Chrysler and GM get a bailout that allows them to stay afloat a couple of months, Bush is able to look good in history, and Obama will have to decide if he wants to put the tax payer on the hook for a poor business model. The Canadian government is also giving a bailout to the Big Three’s Canadian subsidiaries as part of an economic stimulus package. I guess the Canadians have forgotten the mistakes they made in the 1990′s.
Another reason for Term Limit
Despite our poor economy and record unemployment Congress has allowed itself an automatic pay raise of $4700.00, by failing to freeze congressional salaries for this year. This will raise the average yearly salary of a law maker to $174,000.
More waste of Tax Payer money
An Associated Press study has found that $1.6 billion dollars of Tarp funds went to executives of bailed out banks. According to federal securities documents, the benefits included cash bonuses, stock options, personal use of company jets and chauffeurs, home security, country club memberships and professional money management services thanks to the generosity of the American tax payer. (AP 21 Dec 08; frank Bass and Rita Beamish)
Why we are headed towards an Economic Depression
Because of my opinions on the economy people incorrectly assume that I am a staunch Republican. That is the furthest from the truth. The truth be told, I’m an Independent voter with some beliefs that would make my Republican friends cringe. A good example of my liberal side is the belief that we should form a partnership with Habitat for Humanity and fill all the foreclosed homes that the banks can’t with people who can’t get a traditional loan.
I am equally annoying to my more liberal friends because I believe in second amendment rights, and I don’t believe that tax and spend is the way to manage our country.
It didn’t matter if a Democrat or a Republican got elected this year, we were heading from a recession straight to a depression, simply because of the way we manage our economy. Instead of using common sense both parties have adopted the idea that we can spend ourselves into prosperity. The nation is up to its eyeballs in debt from other countries, and despite the fact that we have lowered the interest rate to 0-0.25% we still have been unable to turn the economy around. As long as Washington and the financial sector continues to throw good money after bad, our deficit will continue to grow.
It would be ok to loan money to GM or Chrysler if they had a solid business plan that would put them on the road to recovery, but that isn’t the case. In order for the auto industry to survive, major concessions from the auto industry, the UAW, and creditors will have to be made. The industry will have to cut unsuccessful lines and start making a product that Americans would want to buy. The UAW need to get real and offer a concession to legacy retirement benefits. In order for the industry to survive retirees need to start paying for at least 50% of their health benefits. Creditors need to be willing to write off some of the debt that the industry owes. If an agreement can’t be voluntarily made and the industry refuses to reorganize under Chapter 11, then they deserve to go out of business. Congress should grow a backbone and do what is right in this case, and not what is politically correct. I’m sure that Washington will continue to throw money at the problem instead of holding the auto industry accountable for its actions.
Even though the bailout line will only get longer, Washington will continue to spend like there is no tomorrow. By 2009 the Obama administration will be forced to delay the tax break he promised to the middle class. By 2010 President-elect Obama will be forced to raise taxes in an attempt to shore up the economy. By 2011 our country as well as the European Union and Asia’s economies will collapse because of excessive debt will cause a depression that will rival the 1930′s. By 2018 we will begin to recover financially.
President-elect Obama who so skillfully blamed our current economic problems on the Bush administration will soon find himself in the same position in the 2012 election as his successor places the responsibility of the depression squarely on his shoulders.

This year has seen an increase for assistance from charitable organizations due to the economy. You can help by donating to your local food bank. Most grocery stores will swipe a coupon at the register and donate the proceeds to your area food bank. The Salvation Army is another agency who provides assistance in the form of food and Christmas gifts for the needy. (They have overhead expenses of only four percent, which means that you aren’t paying some fat cat’s salary.) Then of course there is my favorite charity, the Marine Corps Toys for Tots. It doesn’t matter which charity you give to, just give.
Speaking of charity, give yourself the gift of good health. Getting out on the dance floor can be just as beneficial as regular exercise. It doesn’t matter if you can’t dance, get out and have some fun and do your PT at the same time.
The Christmas edition will follow shortly.

Doug Williams Christmas Edition
“An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:9-12
Christmas Gifts
My brother is a generous guy who has an appreciation for practical electronic gifts, and he doesn’t mind sharing his enthusiasm with you. Thanks to my brother, my wife and I now own two atomic clocks, and a portable GPS unit. The clock doesn’t live up to its promise of never having to set your clock, but it does give you the date, time and temperature. Did I mention that the clock looks pretty sharp? Well it does, which is why we have one in our kitchen and one in my office. Never mind the fact that I have to change the time during daylight savings time, it looks good. The GPS was a more practical gift. I used it to locate survey markers on properties that my friends have owned, and it has also been useful on hunting trips with friends, even though I am probably one of the few people on earth that know how to use a map and compass.
My brother and I are both guilty of giving white elephants for Christmas gifts. When I was about twelve I thought it would be great to get my mother an iron for Christmas. I must admit that I was totally confused when I was asked to take her present back and get something else. Even though it was a practical gift I soon came to realize that I hadn’t put much thought into my Mother’s Christmas present. As I was standing in line at Sears waiting to return the iron I remembered a conversation I had with the late Jimmy Adkins.
Jimmy was not only a friend, mentor and role model; he was a Father figure as well. When I was about ten the dollar was not going as far as it used to. Knowing that I was limited in my purchases I decided to ask the people on my gift list what they wanted for Christmas; jimmy was naturally the first person that I asked. Jim’s answer was really quite simple and it never changed over the years, “All I want is a pack of white socks.” It was a very practical and simple gift. As I stood in line at Sears that day, I realized I had forgotten part of the lesson part of the lesson learned. As long as you put some thought into it even the simplest gift was a great gift.
I never apologized to my mother for being a dope but I did get her Christmas presents that she appreciated after that. Over the years I have strived to know what my friends and family’s likes and dislikes are. This has gone a long way towards making Christmas shopping a lot easier. I still make a few mistakes every now and then, but for the most part I get it right.
What about those gifts that you really didn’t want? In some cases it’s ok to regift, in other cases simply exchanging the gift is the right thing to do. There are times however, when it’s better to keep your mouth shut.
One year I had dropped numerous hints to my ex-wife about a Colt Commander that was on sale at a local gun shop. She was a reasonably intelligent individual so I figured that I was going to get my Colt after all of these years. On Christmas Eve and invited my friends to our place and we all exchanged gifts. I opened all of my presents, starting with the larger boxes first, but there was no Colt to be found. The last box under the tree was a small 3 x 3 box. As I opened the box I remember thinking maybe she put the receipt in the box, so you can imagine my disappointment when I opened the box and found a new wedding ring. (My old one was working just fine.) My ex could see that I was somehow disappointed, and she was getting that look which was a warning of an imminent explosion. I quickly did the smart thing and kept my mouth shut as I put on my new ring. For those of you who are wondering, I never did get my Colt.
In the past month I have heard many tales about white elephant gifts they received. Few people however, have admitted to making a bad choice when purchasing a gift. Some like Cindy of Omaha, Ne were disappointed when she got a guitar instead of a drum set. Kevin of St. Louis, MO said buying his wife clothing was his big mistake. Shelly and Jennifer of Virginia both received glass pigs for Christmas gifts. Most of the Christmas gifts fit into a few categories.
The top five worst Christmas gifts
Number five: Clothing
Number four: Perfume or Cologne
Number three: Cheap Alcohol
Number two: Goes to Lisa of Elk Wood, VA. A humping monkey.
The number one gift goes to my younger brother Mark.(The guy who’s impressed with electronic gadgets.) Mark bought his wife a bathroom scale with a lot of bells and whistles.
For those of you who are wondering, my brother is still alive. Fortunately for him his wife Cindy is a forgiving soul who believes that it’s the thought that counts.
My wife Kathleen and I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Remember not to drink and drive, and take the time to work off some of that food your stuffing in your face. If you see a member of our armed forces or law enforcement out on the street please take the time to wish them a Merry Christmas.

Officer Down Coverage
Lately you may have noticed that I have been recording the deaths of officers who have died in the line of duty. From time to time we read a story about an officer’s death, and we may notice a mourning band on an officer’s badge; but fourteen days after the officer’s funeral, the mourning band is taken removed from an officer’s badge the officer is forgotten by the public. Some of you have asked me why I have chosen to report their deaths. I do not report their deaths for headlines, but to remind people of how often these unsung heroes give their lives for our safety. (As of this date for 2008, 138 officers have died in the line of duty.) I also do it to honor the brave men and women that I have worked with over the years.
It takes a special kind of person to be a Police Officer. You must be willing to be on duty 24 hours a day. The work is dangerous and often takes precedence over your personal life and that of your family’s as well. When performing your job you will find that your presence is not wanted, even by those you have sworn to protect and serve, and the pay is definitely not nearly enough. (Sounds like what our troops do every day.)
It also takes a special kind of person to be a cop’s spouse. The biggest stressor in a marriage is whether or not one’s spouse is coming home today. Add overtime and court appearances into the equation and the officer are home even less. This can strain a marriage and cause problems with the behavior of their children. These are just a few of the problems that contribute to the high divorce rate in the profession which is why Police Officers tend to marry within their profession.
We read about an officer getting shot in the line of duty but the public is largely unaware of the rise in officer deaths due to traffic deaths. A particularly disturbing trend is the number of officers who are struck by inattentive motorists. For the month of December on the Officer Down Memorial Page, the majority of deaths were a result of being hit by a vehicle. These are deaths that for the most part could have been prevented.
Here are a few safety tips that I recommend to help our officers:
- Pay attention when driving. If you have to use a cell phone, use a hands free device.
- Obey the speed limit, especially on narrow rural roads.
- Exercise seasonal and situational driving habits. Consider visibility and road conditions when driving in bad weather. (Visibility and weather have been a factor in several fatalities.)
- When you see an officer stopped on the side of the road give them plenty of room. If you can’t move into another lane, slow down when passing the scene.
- Don’t rubberneck at the scene of an accident. If you’re paying attention to the road you won’t cause an accident.
Responding to calls and pursuits are two other reasons officers are involved in fatal vehicle accidents. Turn down your stereo when driving and pay attention so that you can see and hear a police car approaching an intersection. Allow the officer to have the right of way, and be aware of additional units that may be following the first officer.
Police pursuits are often the result of high risk behavior by the offender. The reasons for an officer to pursue a suspect rarely involve a serious crime, but are usually misdemeanor, or simply thrill seeking. Several years ago I testified against an individual who led a Virginia State Trooper on a wild chase on some very narrow, curvy, rural roads. The offender made the mistake of bragging to me about the incident. The traffic offense was for speeding. The reason the individual gave me for evading the officer: “It was my birthday and I didn’t want to get a ticket.” According to testimony at the trial the suspect reached speeds of 120 mph. In an attempt to evade the Trooper he went into oncoming traffic and ran several stop signs, nearly struck an elderly gentleman who was checking his mail box, and of course he endangered the Trooper’s life. If you have knowledge of a person who engages in this kind of reckless behavior, report them to the proper authorities, the life you save may be an officer’s or someone you know.
During my time in San Antonio I came to know a large segment of the law enforcement community. We not only saw each other at work, but we spent time on the range, on different college campuses, and occasionally at the bar. Between November of 1978 and April of 1990 I lost seven friends in the line of duty. This was the roughest time in my professional life, and it was the biggest motivator for me to want to work in rural areas. Allow me to introduce you to my friends.

Bernabe “Bernie” Salazar
Detective Bernabe “Bernie” Salazar, end of watch, 16 November 1978. Bernie was shot while serving search warrant on a drug dealer. The dealer claimed that he thought Salazar was a rival drug dealer who was trying to harm him. The jury convicted the suspect of a lesser murder charge. Bernie was 37 years old and had been with the San Antonio Police Department for nine years.

Gilbert Ramariez
Officer Gilbert Ramariez, end of watch 24 December 1983. Gilbert was shot at close range by a shotgun wielding suspect while investigating a family disturbance. Officer Ramariez was 34 years old and had been with the San Antonio Police Department for five years.

Edwyn “Eddie” Gorrell
Officer Edwyn “Eddie” Gorrell, end of watch 5 July 1988. On 22 February 1988 Eddie and his partner Robert Serna were both shot by a suspect while trying to arrest a suspect with a history of mental illness. Eddie died after being in a coma for four months. Officer Serna’s wounds were not life threatening and he returned to duty a short time later. Eddie was 34 years old and had been with the San Antonio Police Department for 2 years.
l

Antonio Garcia
Officer Antonio Garcia, end of watch 4 December 1988. Officer Garcia was responding to an officer in trouble call when he lost control of his car in the 6800 block of Culebra road and later died of his injuries. I was on duty when officer Garcia was brought into my emergency room. Unfortunately he would not be the last friend that died before my eyes. Antonio was 26 years old and had been with the San Antonio Police for 2 years.

Patricia Roberta Calderon
Officer Patricia Roberta Calderon, end of watch 27 December 1988. Officer Calderon was chasing a suspect who had stolen two cartons of cigarettes through some heavy brush at two in the morning. Because of the poor visibility at the time, Officer Calderon did not realize that she was near the edge of Salado Creek. Officer Calderon wound up in Salado Creek and was able to get out a distress call before she drowned. It is thought that her body armor and her equipment contributed to her death. Patricia was the first female officer in the San Antonio Police Department to die in the line of duty. At the time the suspect could only be charged with a misdemeanor theft charge. In 1990 the Calderon act was passed by the Texas Legislature. The act allowed for a suspect to be held criminally responsible for the death of an officer during a Pursuit. Patricia was 26 years old and had been with the department for 5 years.

Gary Lee Williams
Officer Gary Lee Williams, (no relation) end of watch 27 March 1989. Gary responded to a suspicious vehicle call at 800 NE Loop 410. Gary encountered two suspects who disarmed him and shot him with his own weapon. He died of his wounds that night at Brooke Army Medical Center. I was talking to Robert Serna at the time Gary was shot, so I was able to hear the officer down call. It was the last time I heard Gary’s voice, and his words still haunt me today.

Roger Henarie
Officer Roger Henarie, end of watch 13 April 1990. Roger was responding to an officer in pursuit call. Roger lost control of his car in the 4600 block of Callaghan road where he struck a utility box. I was on duty that night in the ER, and I was also treating my daughter. Roger took the time to see my daughter and wish her well. I only knew Roger for a short time, but I’ll always remember his great sense of humor.
Moving to a rural area did not prevent me from losing friends on the job, if anything it impacted me more because of the small town atmosphere. Even though I can only raise a glass to toast their memory, I will always have memories of good times with my friends and colleagues.

Mainstream Media Negligent In Its Duties
The media is an important tool of a democracy. It has a responsibility to report news events fairly,
accurately, and without prejudice. No matter how distasteful a media outlet finds a position it has an obligation to professionally cover a story. If it fails to do so the outlet not only violates the public trust, it undermines free speech and it is guilty of negligence of its duties. When a group of outlets exhibit the same behavior they not only undermine free speech but they destroy their credibility as well. Over the past year and a half criticism of the mainstream media has increased because of biased reporting.
In August 2008 the ombudsman (November archives the Parade Deck) for the Washington Post reported that during the Presidential election Barack Obama received three times the favorable front page coverage than John McCain did. CNN and NBC admitted that they felt that the recent Tea Party protests held across the country were not newsworthy. Both organizations actually accused Fox News of giving too much coverage on the Tea Parties.
During my sophomore year in high school and my freshmen year in college I was cursed (or at least I thought I was) with an English teacher named Nelda Andrewartha. This teacher tormented me by forcing me to write on numerous subjects that I found morally or personally offensive. What I didn’t realize was that “Mrs. A” had taught me one of the basics of journalism, which is to professionally write an article without expressing your opinion.
When I was a new student at the University of Alaska I was given two difficult assignments. I had to write a paper supporting the death penalty, and I had to write a paper on why abortion should remain legal. As a Catholic I support neither idea; however, thanks to the tutelage of Mrs. Andrewartha I was able to produce two well written papers that presented both sides of the issues without interjecting my opinion on either position. For the record I got an “A” on both papers
In my first semester of Journalism classes I learned that the basic elements in a good news story were who, what, when where, how, and why. My professor, Edgar Blatchford, told me that if people want your opinion they’ll read an opinion column. The second lesson that I learned was that there were ethical standards in Journalism and that there were serious consequences for unethical behavior. In the past, news outlets reported stories based on the facts and expressed its opinion on an issue in a compass piece or an opinion column. So if I can write a professional article why can’t the mainstream media? What has happened to the professional stands that Journalists are expected to adhere to?
Most media outlets are controlled by people with liberal ideologies. Some of the more liberal outlets are losing subscribers and viewers because of shoddy reporting-so they resort to cheap showbiz tactics in order to attract an audience. Most reporters in the industry are honest professionals that take their responsibility to the people seriously. I cannot say enough good things about Dan Rather (former CBS reporter) or Tom Brokaw of NBC.
There are agencies such as the Huffington Post, CNN, and NBC which is owned by General Electric who have no concept of ethical reporting. The most recent example would be the Tea Party Protests. The Huffington Post actually advertised for Citizen Journalist to infiltrate Tea Party protests and cover unruly crowd behavior. I was surprised and disappointed when Tom Brokaw allowed Janeane Garofalo to launch a hate platform against the Tea Party protesters. She went on to say that those who disagreed with the Obama administration’s policies were racist. NBC failed to produce one piece of footage that supported her claim of racism. By failing to mention disclaimers that MS. Garofalo claims about were unsubstantiated NBC leaves the public with the impression that her statements are true. I would like to believe that Brokaw’s voice in the background encouraging Ms. Garofalo’s rant was due to job preservation.
The most blatant misconduct during the Tea Party story was that of CNN’s. CNN’s own Susan Roesgen conduct at the Chicago Tea Party was the worst that I have ever seen. MS. Roesgen would ask questions of a gentleman who had his child with him and then interrupt him when he tried to answer her questions. During the taped interview that aired on the 16 April episode of the Glen Beck show, she berated the gentleman for being at the protest and then proceeded to tell him that his opinion was wrong. She went on to tell the gentleman how the Obama stimulus plan would affect benefit him. In other footage that was aired on CNN Ms. Roesgen was confronted by other protestors about her behavior. Ms. Roesgen quickly said that this was an anti-government, anti-CNN protest that was not news worthy and shouldn’t be viewed during the family hour.
You may not agree with the position of the Tea Party protesters but let’s examine the merits of the story. The Tea Party protest started with the rant of one individual about the economy on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The protest grew into a movement that carried out nonviolent protest in 2200 cities on 15 April. The protesters were both Democrats and Republican. The stock exchange rant was worth five minutes of fame at best. The fact that the rant grew into a nonpartisan movement that played out in over 2200 cities is a story worth covering. The story should have been covered by every news agency, and it should have been given ample coverage.
If I had been a managing editor here’s how I would have dealt with Ms. Roesgen’s conduct. Susan Roesgen would have been fired for professional misconduct. The producer that aired the segment would also have been fired for allowing the clip on air. As managing editor, I would have personally made a public apology that same day for the poor conduct of my staff; and made it clear that CNN does not tolerate unprofessional or unethical behavior. I would have personally invited the gentleman that was the target of Ms. Roesgen’s abusive behavior onto either a morning or evening segment and allow him to state his case.
The media is supposed to be the public’s watchdog. It should report a story in a fair and balanced manner and allow the public to form its own opinion on an issue. The media should also promote the free exchange of ideas. It should never be allowed censor a story because of ideological differences. When the media allows free speech to be suppressed they undermine the concept of a free press.
I am emailing this article to people on my contact list in hopes that you will forward it to others. Even if you don’t agree with me please forward this to others so that they can make up their own mind on the issue? What can you do to help the current media crisis? Contact your local outlet and let them know how you feel. If that doesn’t work contact the outlets advertisers and tell them that they should only advertise with professional news outlets.

Thought for the day… For this issue we have two by Thomas Jefferson.
“No man will ever carry out of the Presidency the reputation which carried him into it.”
“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

Same bull, just a different political party.
The American people were rightfully angry about the shenanigans that went on during the Bush administration and the lack of leadership by the Republican Party. The Obama campaign did a good job of blaming the Bush administration for the economy while conveniently omitting the Democrats involvement in the mess. Obama ran on the promise of “change and transparency” in the government. The American people frustrated as they were bought his line and voted in a filibuster proof Democratic majority.
It’s been less than one hundred days and it’s clear that the only change in Washington are the faces. President Obama has allowed the Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to create pork laden bill that does little to stimulate the economy and promises to bankrupt our country.
In his first Press conference Obama lied to the nation when he told us that Japan’s deficit quadrupled because the Japanese Government failed to do anything about their economic crisis. It was later reported in the media that the Japanese did in fact enact a stimulus bill but Obama’s Spin Doctor’s countered that the Japanese didn’t act quickly enough and this is why Japans economy sufferd for over a decade.
Obama has attempted to frighten the nation into supporting his stimulus bill by telling us that timing was critical for getting the bill passed so that the nation will avoid an economic crisis “like we haven’t seen before.” The President told us that the bill was so important that the nation didn’t have the luxury of posting the bill online for public inspection as promised in his campaign. (So much for transparency.) The bill quickly cleared the House and Senate on Friday and it has yet to be signed by Obama. Guess what? The economy hasn’t tanked, so could it be he was wrong about the urgency or was he hiding the fact that the bill was comprised largely of pork and earmarks from the American People.
The stimulus bill is over one thousand pages long, and only Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and a few key lobbyists really know what is in the bill. The House democrats voted for the bill without even knowing what it contains. House Republicans refused to vote for it. As an Independent, had I been in office I too would have voted against this bill without further scrutiny. Thanks to Arlin Spector, Olympia Snowe, and Susan Collins, (all moderate Republicans) the Democrats easily passed the bill through the Senate.
According to the Congressional Budget Office the Economic Stimulus Bill’s initial cost of 787 billion dollars will actually cost the taxpayer 3.27 trillion dollars instead of the 1.2 trillion dollar price tag. The new price tag covers startup costs, interest, and the expanded programs that the legislation creates over the next decade.
It’s not clear how the bill will affect the economy because it has been kept from the public eye but here are just a few of the examples of the pork that has been slipped into the bill:
Three billion has been earmarked for ACORN. Remember them, the guys who are under criminal investigation for voter fraud? Does anybody know the status of these investigations now that Obama is in office?
$1.3 billion to bailout Amtrak.
$1 billion for educational programs, including courses on sexually transmitted diseases.
$30 million dollars for wetland restoration in Nancy Pelosi’s district part of which will go towards protecting the endangered salt marsh mouse.
$200 million for a low-pollution, coal fired power plant in Obama’s home state of Illinois.
$45 million for ATV four-wheeler trails.
$200 million to provide computers to community colleges.
$50 million for the National Endowment of the Arts.
$650 million plus in coupons to help consumers buy digital TV converter-box coupons.
$300 million for hybrid vehicles and electric-powered cars, including golf carts for federal workers.
It doesn’t matter it a Democrat or a Republican passed this bill, the items listed above, are good causes, but they have no business in an emergency stimulus package. What should an emergency stimulus package look like? To find out the answer to that one you’ll have to wait until next week to view the Doug Williams emergency stimulus Package.

Hey you, quit stuffing that sandwich in your pie-hole and listen up. The snow is melting and the sidewalks are clear. If you can’t get to the gym then talk a walk in your neighborhood or run if you live in a bad one. Most schools will let you use their track after hours so there’s really no excuse not to get out and PT. Diabetes, strokes, and heart disease are no laughing matter. Remember, you are the individual in charge of your own destiny. Now drop and give me twenty-five. Well any day now sweet heart.
